Slovenia /Slovenija/ (pop. 2,000,000): a country in the Central Europe, between the eastern Alps, the Adriatic sea and the Pannonian plain. Its climate is Mediterranean on the coast, Alpine in the mountains and continental with mild to hot summers and cold winters in the plateaus and valleys to the east.

Present-day Slovenia - the Republic of Slovenia /Republika Slovenija/ - was formed on 25 June 1991 with its independence from the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia. Its ethnic groups represent Slovenes (89%), Croats, Serbs, Bosnians and other nationalities of the former Yugoslavia (10%) and the ethnic Hungarian and Italian minorities (0.5%).Historical ties to Western Europe, a strong economy, and a stable democracy make Slovenia a leading candidate for future membership in the EU and NATO.
