Vegetable is a nutritional and culinary term denoting any part of a plant that is commonly consumed by humans but that is not regarded as a fruit, a nut, herb, or a grain foodstuff. In common use, it includes most non-sweet fruit such as cucumbers, squashes, pumpkins, tomatoes, avocadoes and green peppers.

Vegetables include the leaves (e.g. lettuce), seed-pods (peas), seeds (beans) and stems (rhubarb) of various plants.
Vegetable is also a derogative term indicating a person who is brain-damaged.
